Diwali Puja Vidhi: The Complete Lakshmi-Ganesh Worship Guide

From the right muhurat to the sequence of mantras — a step-by-step guide to performing Diwali puja the authentic way.

Why Diwali Puja Is Different

Diwali is one of the few nights of the year when the unseen current of Goddess Lakshmi is most accessible. The puja you perform on this night is less about ritual perfection and more about clearing your inner and outer space so that prosperity can settle. Done correctly, the energy you generate sustains the entire year ahead.

Choosing the Right Muhurat

The Lakshmi-Ganesh puja is performed during Pradosh Kaal and Sthir Lagna — usually a window of about 1 to 2 hours after sunset. Stable signs like Vrishabha (Taurus), Simha (Leo) and Vrischika (Scorpio) lock the energy of Lakshmi in your home. Avoid Rahu Kaal and Yamagandam at any cost.

Setting Up the Altar

Face east or north. Place Ganesh on the left and Lakshmi on the right (from your perspective). Use a fresh red or yellow cloth. Lay out kalash, deepak, akshat, kumkum, fresh flowers, sweets, coins and a new account book or laptop for Chopda Pujan. Cleanliness is non-negotiable — Lakshmi never enters a disordered space.

The Sequence of Worship

Begin with achman and sankalp. Invoke Ganesh first with his beej mantra, then Lakshmi with Shri Suktam. Offer 16 upacharas — flowers, dhoop, deepak, naivedya. Light 13 diyas around the home after the main puja. Stay awake as long as possible — tradition says Lakshmi blesses households where the lamp is lit through the night.
